April 11

April  21

Quote:  "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." --Mark Twain

February 15

Quote: “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”
Steve Maraboli

Goal for Today: Practice random acts of kindness. Lend a friend a pencil, if someone drops something, help them by picking it up, offer to help carry a student’s backpack when they are injured. It’s little acts like these that don’t take a lot of effort but can make a huge difference to someone.

February 16

Quote: “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”
John Holmes

Goal for Today:  Make a point to try and cheer someone up today. You have the power in yourself to make at least one person’s day better. We all have our off days, days where we just don’t feel good or are just in a bad mood. These are the days where some kind words or a nice gesture go a long way to improve a person’s outlook on the day.

February 17:  CLOSED

February 18

Quote: “Compassion is an unstable emotion. It needs to be translated into action, or it withers. The question of what to do with the feelings that have been aroused, the knowledge that has been communicated. If one feels that there is nothing 'we' can do -- but who is that 'we'? -- and nothing 'they' can do either -- and who are 'they' -- then one starts to get bored, cynical, apathetic.”
Susan Sontag

Goal for Today: Action starts with you. If you want to see a change, start the process of change yourself. Pick up trash you see in your classroom, don’t interrupt others when they are talking, say excuse me if you bump into someone. These little acts are simple gestures, but they can start a chain reaction that turns into a big change.

February 19

Quote: “Protect your enthusiasm from the negativity and fear of others. Never decide to do nothing just because you can only do little. Do what you can. You would be surprised at what "little" acts have done for our world.”
Steve Maraboli

Goal for Today: Even little acts create a big change. When we make a habit of doing little acts of kindness, it becomes ahabit and eventually something that we do naturally. Soon, others notice the difference and start acting, too. It all begins with one small act. So act! Do! Be the difference and make a change!

February 22

Quote: “I don't want to live in the kind of world where we don't look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I can’t change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.” ― Charles de Lint

Goal for Today:  Catch your attitude.  You cannot change what people do, but you can change how you react to it.  When someone is mean, catch yourself, be empathetic “they must have had a bad morning.”

February 23

Quote: "A truly compassionate attitude toward others does not change even if they behave negatively or hurt you."
Dalai Lama

Goal for Today:  When someone says something to offend you. Walk away.  Don’t make their problems yours.

February 24

Quote: “It only takes a split second to smile and forget, yet to someone that needed it, it can last a lifetime.”
Steve Maraboli

Goal for Today:  A smile is contagious.  Make a special effort to smile…see how many people smile back. This will automatically improve your day.

February 25

Quote: "Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others." — Booker T. Washington

Goal for Today:  At the top of your Agenda, each day, write a kindness you did for someone.  This is a plan in progress.  Every day, each week, write the kindnesses you do daily.

February 26:

Quote: "Fear is such a powerful emotion for humans that when we allow it to take us over, it drives compassion right out of our hearts." — Thomas Aquinas

Goal for Today: Allow kindness to be your Rule.  Catch yourself daily before you leave your house.  When you are about to say or something you know to be cruel – STOP – That is not your Rule.

January 11, 2016

Welcome to our first Cobra Character week!

For the next 10 days, we will be focusing on "Responsibility." As part of this focus, we ask you all to talk to your child about the daily quote, goal, and when possible, work it into your daily family routine. Thank you for your support!

Here are the first 5 days of Responsibility:

10 Days of Character: January 11-January 15, 2016

January 11:Welcome to our first Cobra Character week!  For the next 10 days, we will be focusing on “Responsibility.”  I would like to share a quote with you by Hubert Selby Jr.:

Quote:  “Eventually we all have to accept full and total responsibility for our actions, everything we have done, and have not done. ”
Hubert Selby Jr

Goal for Today:  Be responsible and arrive to all of your classes on time.  When you arrive on time, you are showing your classmates and your teachers that you are responsible for your own time management.  When you manage your time well, you accomplish your tasks and show others you can be depended on.

January 12

Quote: “You may believe that you are responsible for what you do, but not for what you think. The truth is that you are responsible for what you think, because it is only at this level that you can exercise choice. What you do comes from what you think. ”
Marianne Williamson

Goal for Today:  Every choice you make today, consider how it will affect the people around you.  How will your parents feel if you went home and cleaned up a mess?  How would your teacher feel if you offered to help them pass out papers?  How would your friend feel if you helped them carry their books?  Throughout the day, think about ways you can be responsible for helping those around you, and ACT.  Your thoughts become your actions.

January 13

Quote: “Choices may be unbelievably hard but they're never impossible. To say you have no choice is to release yourself from responsibility and that's not how a person with integrity acts.”
Patrick Ness

Goal for Today:  Everyday, we make choices.  We choose what to eat, we choose what to say, and we choose how to act.  Today, make choices that model what being responsible looks like.  Choose to do all of your work in your classes.  Choose to stand up for someone you care about.  Choose to follow all of the rules.  Your choices reflect who you are every minute of the day.

January 14

Quote: “Responsibility and Trust -- these two are like Yin and Yang, together perfectly complete, and each one requiring the presence of the other.
The next time you mistrust someone, consider this -- does that person feel responsible for you in any way? If the answer is yes, then go ahead and trust them. Very likely, they are looking out for your best interest.”
Vera Nazarian

Goal for Today:  Take an inventory of the people in your life you can trust.  Why do you trust them?  Ask yourself, “Can I be trusted?”  If you answer yes, great job!  You must be responsible.  If your answer is no, decide on 3 things you can do differently to be “trustworthy.”

January 15

Quote:  “Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.”
Noam Chomsky

Goal for Today:  Take responsibility for making a brighter future by encouraging your friends to be optimistic in the face of challenges.  Today, choose 3 friends to “cheer up.”  You can cheer up your friends by complimenting them in some way, and helping them stay optimistic.  For example, you might tell a friend, “Cheer up!  I can help you with your homework in math,” or “Don’t be sad you didn’t get a present for your mom.  I’ll help you make a birthday card at lunch.”  Whatever the case may be, be a responsible friend by helping them with their problems.
